The 1970’s started as turbulent as the 60’s ended but soon enough it would be apparent that the 1970’s would take on its own identity. Nixon would be forced out of office and the troops at long last would be leaving Viet Nam. Cars of the early 1970’s for the most part were still showing off their muscles but circumstances aboard would soon put a big change to the way the big 3 in America would think in terms of car designs. Due to the oil crisis of 1973 (the embargo imposed by OPEC) gasoline became scarce. And even though the embargo was lifted in March of 1974 the damage was done, oil prices quadrupled and things would never be the same. By the mid 70’s the Department of Transportation mandated downsizing of the existing automotive categories. The era of the muscle cars was over and aerodynamics were starting to be more incorporated in the design of the mid to late 1970’s cars.
Our 1970’s diecast cars page focuses more on the pre embargo cars of the decade, when muscle cars were still a force to be reckoned with.
Other cars from this era can be found on our Franklin Mint Page.
